Brief Description of Event
National Oral Hygiene Day is celebrated every year to commemorate the birth anniversary of Late Dr. G.B. Shankwalkar. He was the doyen of Indian Periodontics and founder member of Indian Society of Periodontology (ISP).
The Department of Periodontology, Babu Banarasi Das College of Dental Sciences (BBDCODS) in collaboration with ISP celebrated National Oral Hygiene Week, from the 01st of August to the 07th of August, 2024 with zeal and fervor. The theme for this year was “Gum-Care for All” with the aim of making general dentists and students aware of early diagnosis of gum diseases, their prevention and management. Following the lecture, an online quiz was organized by ISP, to ensure the inculcation of the knowledge provided through the lectures.

Also, a radio talk show, “Smile, while you still have teeth”, was recorded by Dr. Mona Sharma, Professor and Head, Department of Periodontology, BBDCODS, which was aired on the 01st of August 2024, on BBD 90.8 FM.
The Department organized a free dental check-up for all the patients along with distribution of toothpastes and bamboo toothbrushes samples. A demonstration of plaque detection, using plaque detection gun, was given to students and patients in collaboration with Haleon. The need for gum care was emphasized. Special aspect was the distribution of samples to security guards of the campus.
Rangoli was made by undergraduate students, in the Department, to focus people’s attention towards the celebration. A selfie-corner was decorated by the Interns to add to the celebrations. Dr. Puneet Ahuja, Principal, BBDCODS, graced the occasion for cake cutting and motivating the Department and students regarding importance of gum-care.
Fun activities for Undergraduates, Postgraduates and Interns were organized in lieu with the theme, to spread awareness among the students. E-slogan writing competition was held for the PGs and an active participation was seen. The PGs had to submit slogans incorporating the theme. Poster making competition, highlighting the theme, for the undergraduates and interns, were also organized. The events were judged by Dr. Saurabh Srivastava, Reader, Department of Oral Medicine and Radiology and Dr. Kamna Srivastava, Reader, Department of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics. The winners and participants were felicitated with certificates. In addition, the student scoring highest marks in Periodontology, in BDS final year (Batch of 2019), Mahima Verma, was awarded with an appreciation certificate.
The celebrations concluded with group photographs with the judges, winners and participants and words of encouragement by Dr. Mona Sharma, Professor and Head, Department of Periodontology, BBDCODS.
