Periodontal disease, commonly known as pyorrhoea, affects 51% of Indian population and more than 1 billion people worldwide. The main cause is lack of awareness to keep the mouth and teeth clean. When tartar accumulates on teeth and patients do not visit a dentist, it starts affecting the gums, teeth and the bone that supports the teeth making all these structures weak. The result is loss of tooth and a compromised lifestyle of the patient. However, according to research timely treatment has success rates of up to95%, prolonging the life of teeth. And these depend on several factors, including the type of procedure and how well the patient cares for their teeth and gums after treatment.
The study that was presented at the Conference was carried out in the Department of Periodontology, BBDCODS. Ithighlighted the importanceof timely periodontal treatment and usingbone grafts to regrow bone around the tooth. This procedure helps to stop pyorrhoea and help in bone gain thereby prolonging life of teeth.
Afterall, a solid superstructure always needs a solid foundation vis a vis strong gums will always provide support to teeth.
